Gable on Wrestling Camps:

I am an advocate of summer wrestling camps; wrestlers and coaches can gain a great deal from them. You're bound to learn something about technique and training that will help you during the next season, and probably for the rest of your career. Plus, the competition and social opportunities afforded in these camps are invaluable to the maturation of a developing wrestler. At the same time, I'm a firm believer in not pushing someone too fast.

Here are some recommendations for camps and clinics for specific age groups:

Elementary School: For the most part, stick with local day camps offered by community clubs and youth sports programs. If such camps arent available or the wrestler is advanced for his age, he might consider traveling to a stay-over youth wrestling camp. These youth camps should specialize in skill and activity work that is fun and simple. Ben and John Peterson, Olympic Champions in 1972 and 1976, have a great father-son wrestling camp (See Camp of Champs, below) that enhances both knowledge of the sport and the relationship between the boy and his father. Middle and Junior High School: This age group benefits most from technique camps that emphasize how to train to improve wrestling skills. Classroom topics at these camps should include proper attitude, strength and conditioning, and nutrition. Its also helpful if these young athletes are exposed to top-notch scholastic, collegiate, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling at the camps, either in person or on videotape.

High School: At this age, wrestlers are ready for more intensive training camps that emphasize technique. Some of the sessions can even have wrestlers working out at close to in-season intensity. Some camps pattern themselves after World or Olympic training camps, although the high school campers are shown more techniques. Advanced high school wrestlers might have the opportunity to participate in Olympic development or national camps, which provide great learning experiences for the athletes and expose them to college coaches who might be interested in recruiting them.
